Backyard Farmers' Cozy Cold Frame designs can help you extend your growing season right through winter in many locations for certain crops.  Each unit is made in the great state of Maine from durable and rot-resistant northern white cedar. The top and sides are covered with a high-strength, honey-combed insulating polycarbonate.

Your cold frame plans will really come together with our ready to assemble (15 minutes),highly functional, attractive, and long-lasting frame.

It is the dream of every sincere farmer to grow savory vegetables all year round. Cold frames provide the essential tool for prolonging your growing season by acting like a miniature greenhouse. The Cozy Cold Frame is a stand alone unit that is ideal for placing up against the south side of the house.

The Cozy Cold Frame can be used to grow hardy crops like winter lettuces and spinach deep into late fall and winter months depending on the climate, or to start seeds or seedlings for an early start to the spring growing season. Our cold frames are designed for optimum solar heat gain and easy access. Keep the lightweight, hinged, double wall polycarbonate frames partially opened during the day with the Cozy Cold Frame sturdy cedar lid prop. The polycarbonate is just on the top of the cold frame while the walls are all 100% cedar.

Each Cozy Cold Frame is constructed with thick walls of long-lasting Northern White Cedar using long-lasting, quality screw construction. Cedar is naturally rot-resistant and insect repellent. The top frames are made from high quality, double wall polycarbonate framed in cedar for optimal durability and solar heat gain. The cold frame dimensions are 4 feet long by 24 inches wide with 1 ¼ inch thick walls.

How much assembly is required?

The Cozy Cold Frame is largely assembled. Final assembly is completed by 100% screw construction.

Where should I position my cold frames?

We recommend you position your cold frame facing south or southeast with 6-8 hrs of daily sunlight. The cozy cold frame looks handsome positioned with its high side flush against the side of your house or along a fence line.

What about the soil for inside?

Yes, you want to build up the soil inside by about 4" - 6" (less if you will be planting taller plants)   If you have ordered raised beds from Backyard Farmers, often times there is extra soil left over with the delivery that can be used for the cold frame.  Regardless, the soil in side should first be completely turned and grass move the compost pile before mixing in the new soil and some of the Native Goodness organic fertilizer and/or compost.  Make sure you turn your soil and prep. the area BEFORE setting the cold frame in place.

IMPORTANT:  If you order a cold frame at the same time you order raised beds, we will see to it that additional compost/topsoil blend is delivered to your site at no additional charge.
